West Virginia Nursing CE Requirements

Registered Nurse (RN) - Total Hours Required: 12 | Elective Hours: 7-9 | Renewal Cycle: Annual 

All West Virginia RN licenses expire each year on October 31st. West Virginia RN's and APRN's are required to complete 12 contact hours of continuing education (CE) annually. Required courses include a 3-hour initial requirement on Best Prescribing & Drug Diversion Training and then 1-contact-hour annually thereafter of Drug Diversion Training and Best Prescribing for West Virginia NursesAdditionally, there is a annual requirement of 2-hours of CE on Mental Health Conditions common to Veterans and Their Families. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Total Hours Required: 24 | Elective Hours: 17-19 | Renewal Cycle: 2 Years

All West Virginia LPN licenses expire on June 30th of each even numbered year. West Virginia LPN's must complete 24 hours of continuing education and engage in a minimum of 400 clock hours of LPN practice during each 2-year reporting period. Each renewal period LPN's are required to complete a 2 hour CE requirement in Mental Health Conditions Common to Veterans and their Families and a 3 hours of CE on substance abuse as covered in Best Prescribing and Drug Diversion Training. Additionally, each LPN must complete a one-time-requirement of 2 contact hours of End of Life Care, including Pain Management at first licensure renewal when CE is required or at the time of reinstatement of a lapsed or inactive license (End of Life Care course not currently offered by MedCEC). Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) - All West Virginia APRN's must complete a minimum of 24 contact hours during each 2-year reporting period consisting of 12 contact hours in pharmacotherapeutics (8 hours may be used for renewal and reinstatement of Limited Prescriptive Authority in accordance with WV19CSR8) and 12 contact hours in the clinical management of patients (12 hours may count towards CE requirement for RN license in accordance with WV19CSR11).
