New York State Board of Nursing Continuing Education

Total Hours Required: RN / LPN Variable | Renewal Cycle: 3 Years

New York State RN's and LPN's are required to complete several State-Mandated courses listed below.

Required Courses

Infection Control | Under Section 6505-b of the Education Law, all RN's, LPN's, dentists, dental hygienists, optometrists and podiatrists must complete a NYSED Approved Infection Control course initially, and every 4 years thereafter. Child Abuse Reporting | NYSED Approved Child Abuse Reporting Course (one-time, 2-hour course) | Included as part of RN nursing programs after September 1, 1990. This course is not currently available from MedCEC™. For additional information see http://www.op.nysed.gov/reports/continuing_competence.pdf

Pain Management, Paliative Care and Addiction | Under Public Health Law §3309-a(3), prescribers of controlled substances are required to complete a 3-hour course in Pain management, Paliative care and Addiction every 3 years. License Expiration Dates

In New York State, RN's & LPN's are required to renew their registration every three (3) years to continue to practice nursing. Audits and Retaining CE Records

In New York State, each licensee is required to maintain a record of their CE attendance at approved CE programs.
