Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing Continuing Education

Total Hours Required for RN / LPN: 15 hours | Elective Hours: 15 | Renewal Cycle: 2 Years

Massachusetts RN's and LPN's must complete a minimum of 15 contact hours of elective courses during the two-year renewal period. 

Required Courses

- Domestic and Sexual Violence Training

- Training in the Care of Patients with Cognitive Impairments

Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence Training

"Pursuant to M.G.L. c. 112, § 264, applicants and licensees shall participate in at least one domestic violence and sexual violence training as a condition for licensure, renewal, revival or reinstatement of licensure" (Chapter 260

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health , Bureau of Community Health Access and Prevention, Division of Sexual and Domestic Violence Prevention and Services was asked by multiple Boards, including the Board of Registration in Nursing, to develop the Chapter 260 training.

Training in the Care of Patients with Cognitive Impairments

Pursuant to chapter 220, as of November 7, 2018, applicants for initial licensure must have completed "a one-time course of training and education in the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with cognitive impairments, including, but not limited to, Alzheimer's disease and dementia" and licensees applying to renew a license must complete this course by November 7, 2022.

License Expiration Dates

In Massachusetts, nurses must renew their license biennially (every 2 years) prior to midnight on their birthday. RN licenses renew in even numbered years and LPN licenses renew in odd numbered years. Audits and Retaining CE Records

"The Board of Registration in Nursing may request verification of compliance at any time.
