Kentucky RN's and LPN's have a variety of options to satisfy continued competency requirements for renewal of an active license. Continuing educational course options include: earning fourteen (14) approved contact hours of CE OR earning seven (7) approved contact hours of CE plus a nursing employment evaluation completed during the renewal period that is satisfactory for continued employment.

One Time Course Requirements for RN's & LPN's
Domestic Violence - 3 contact hours of approved domestic violence CE must be earned within three (3) years of Kentucky licensure. This is a one-time requirement. (MedCEC does not currently offer this course)
Not required for;
- Nurses who graduated from a Kentucky Nursing program AFTER MAY 1998 as content was included in program curriculum.
Required for;
- Nurses seeking licensure by endorsement from another state or licensure by examination for candidates educated outside of Kentucky.
Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma (Shaken Baby Syndrome) - 1.5 contact hours of approved CE which covers the recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma. This is a one-time requirement. (MedCEC does not currently offer this course)
Not required for;
- Nurses who graduated from a Kentucky Nursing program AFTER DECEMBER 2011 as content was included in program curriculum.
Required for;
- Nurses seeking licensure by endorsement from another state or licensure by examination for candidates educated outside of Kentucky.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Credentialed Nurses - 5 contact hours of approved sexual assault CE each licensure period.
- Forensic medicine or domestic violence CE will meet this requirement.
- Hours may count as part of the required fourteen (14) contact hours of continuing education needed for renewal of the RN license.
APRN's
Pharmacology CE requirement - 5 contact hours
APRN's with CAPA-CS - The Use of KASPER, Pain Management, or Addiction Disorders - 1.5 contact hours

License Expiration Dates

Audits and Retaining CE Records
"You are not required to submit CE certificates to KBN unless requested to do so through the CE audit. Nurses must retain records of their CE/competency for at least 5 years following a licensure period."
