District of Columbia CE Requirements

Renewal Date - District of Columbia RN licenses expire on June 30th of even numbered years.
Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - The District of Columbia requires that RN's, LPN's and APRN's complete continuing education (CE) each two year renewal period.
RN's are required to complete a total of 24 contact hours of CE during each renewal and LPN's are required to complete a total of 18 hours. Both RN's and LPN's are required to complete 3 contact hours of HIV / AIDS education and 2 contact hours of LGBTQ Culture Competency training as part of their total contact hours. Law 21-95 (LGBTQ Cultural Competency Continuing Education Amendment Act of 2016) (MedCEC does not currently offer the 2-hour LGBTQ course)
Additional Requirements for APRN's - Advanced Practice Registered Nurses must include 15 contact hours of the required 24 hours in pharmacology which relates to their particular specialty / current area of practice. Additional information can be found by visiting the District of Columbia Board of Nursing.(MedCEC does not currently offer courses which meet the 15 contact hour pharmacology requirement).
Special Circumstances
Military Deployment - Deployed nurses receive a 6-month grace period to meet CE requirements following deployment.
Extended Illness - Nurses with documented extended illness.
