     Vector-borne diseases are a global health concern. Healthcare professionals need to know the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases, be aware of which vector-borne diseases are most common in their state, be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of vector-borne diseases, know how to treat patients with vector-borne diseases, and be able to educate patients on precautions which can be used to help prevent exposure to vector-borne diseases.

Educational Goals & Learning Outcomes

     The goal of this course is to increase the knowledge base of healthcare professionals regarding vector-borne disease including; the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases, which vector-borne disease are most common in their state, the signs & symptoms of vector-borne diseases, how to treat patients with vector-borne diseases, and being able to educate patients on precautions they can use to help prevent vector-borne diseases for occurring. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases

  • Assess which vector-borne diseases are most common in their state

  • Distinguish symptoms of vector-borne diseases

  • Differentiate treatments for patients with vector-borne diseases

  • Illustrate precautions which can be used to help prevent vector-borne diseases

Darren C. Leach, MSN, APRN, NP-C

    Darren C. Leach is a nurse practitioner and author. He is licensed as an APRN by the State of Florida and Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. His professional experience ranges across the lifespan from infants to the elderly with positions in adult internal and emergency care, pediatric internal and emergency care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care as well as endocrinology and nephrology. He has also provided education to nurses, patients, and families in a variety of formats and settings. He received his Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 2005, and his Masters of Science degree in Family Health Nursing in 2010.
