     Under State and federal law, employees have the right to be free from discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace, yet little progress has been made to reduce the occurrence of harassment over the past decade. This conversational style course provides Illinois healthcare professionals with answers to some of the most commonly asked questions regarding discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. Topics include; definitions and types of sexual harassment, reporting and protections from retaliation, consequences of violating the prohibition of sexual harassment, and consequences of making a false report. This course satisfies course requirements for Illinois Sexual Harassment Prevention Training under Public Act 100-0762 (2019) and Ill. Admin Code Title 68, § 1130.400 (2019).

Educational Goals & Learning Outcomes

    The goal of this course is to increase the knowledge of Illinois healthcare professionals in regards to sexual harassment prevention including: the prohibition of sexual harassment by law; definitions of discrimination and harassment as well as defining types of sexual harassment; details of how to report an allegation of sexual harassment, unlawful discrimination or harassment; the definition and description of retaliation for reporting sexual harassment, unlawful discrimination or harassment allegations and; the consequences of a violation of the prohibition of sexual harassment, unlawful discrimination or harassment and; the consequences for knowingly making a false report. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Compare sexual harassment, unlawful discrimination and harassment

  • Appraise the health effects and economic impact of sexual harassment

  • Categorize types of sexual harassment

  • Interpret individual rights under federal and Illinois State law

  • Demonstrate steps victims of sexual harassment should take to report harassment

  • Differentiate methods of reporting sexual harassment

  • Illustrate methods of employer retaliation and protections from retaliation

  • Examine consequences of violating harassment laws or making a false report

  • Evaluate the responsibilities of employers

About the Course Author(s)

Darren C. Leach, MSN, APRN, NP-C

     Darren C. Leach is a nurse practitioner and author. He is licensed as an APRN by the State of Florida and Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. His professional experience ranges across the lifespan from infants to the elderly with positions in adult internal and emergency care, pediatric internal and emergency care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care as well as endocrinology and nephrology. He has also provided education to nurses, patients, and families in a variety of formats and settings. He received his Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 2005, and his Masters of Science degree in Family Health Nursing in 2010.
