This course discusses many of the mental health conditions which are common to Veterans and their family members including; anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and substance abuse disorders as well as the increased risk of suicide among Veterans and complications of bereavement. Methods of mental health screening for Veterans and their family members are described, appropriate interventions and treatment modalities are discussed, and available resources for Veterans and their families are identified. This course satisfies the requirement under West Virginia SB437 and West Virginia Code § 30-1-7a for two (2) contact hours of CE Mental Health Conditions Common to Veterans and Their Families.

The goal of this course is to increase the knowledge base of healthcare professionals regarding the types of mental health conditions common to Veterans and their family members, the various screening methods used to identify these mental health conditions, how to provide effective interventions and treatment, and how to educate Veterans and their families on available resources to help them effectively improve their mental health. Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Analyze the epidemiology of common mental health conditions
Categorize mental health conditions common in Veterans & their family members
Distinguish symptoms of the most common mental health conditions
Evaluate screening methods used to identify common mental health conditions
Differentiate interventions and treatments for common mental health conditions
Illustrate available resources for Veterans and their families
Darren C. Leach, MSN, APRN, NP-C
Darren C. Leach is a nurse practitioner and author. He is licensed as an APRN by the State of Florida and Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. His professional experience ranges across the lifespan from infants to the elderly with positions in adult internal and emergency care, pediatric internal and emergency care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care as well as endocrinology and nephrology. He has also provided education to nurses, patients, and families in a variety of formats and settings. He received his Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 2005, and his Masters of Science degree in Family Health Nursing in 2010.
