Human trafficking, is a global health concern. Beyond failing to extend the basic principles of common human decency to others, human traffickers precipitate a myriad of negative health consequences for their victims including physiological, psychological and emotional problems. Healthcare professionals need to be able to assess patients for signs of human trafficking, employ available resources, and implement appropriate interventions. This course satisfies the requirement for continuing education under Fla. Stat. 464.013 and s. 787.06 F.S.

The goal of this course is to enable participants to assess for the signs of human trafficking, employ available resources, and implement appropriate interventions. Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Assess patients for signs of human trafficking
Employ available resources for the benefit of victims of human trafficking
Illustrate the federal definition of severe forms of human trafficking
Appraise risk factors for becoming a victim of human trafficking
Demonstrate a victim-centered and trauma-informed approach to communication
Appraise general, subjective and objective indicators of trafficking
Choose appropriate reporting methods for victims of human trafficking
Support protection of victims, prevention of trafficking and prosecution of traffickers
Darren C. Leach, MSN, APRN, NP-C
Darren C. Leach is a nurse practitioner and author. He is licensed as an APRN by the State of Florida and Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. His professional experience ranges across the lifespan from infants to the elderly with positions in adult internal and emergency care, pediatric internal and emergency care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care as well as endocrinology and nephrology. He has also provided education to nurses, patients, and families in a variety of formats and settings. He received his Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 2005, and his Masters of Science degree in Family Health Nursing in 2010.
