Domestic Violence, also referred to as intimate partner violence, is a significant public health issue which affects millions of women and men across the United States each year. There are numerous negative health outcomes associated with domestic violence, along with considerable societal costs. Healthcare professionals need to know who is at risk for domestic violence, the signs and symptoms of domestic violence, the health risks associated with domestic violence, their responsibilities for reporting, and what resources are available to help victims of domestic violence. This course satisfies course requirements under 64B9-5.010, F.A.C, and requirements under 456.031, Fla. Stat.

The goal of this course is to increase the participants knowledge of domestic violence including types of domestic violence, who is affected, risk factors, negative health consequences, signs of domestic violence, documentation, reporting and resources available to assist victims of domestic violence. Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Differentiate between types of domestic violence
Contrast who is affected by domestic violence
Categorize risk factors for domestic violence
Appraise the health consequences of domestic violence
Distinguish signs of domestic violence
Demonstrate appropriate documentation of domestic violence
Support reporting of domestic violence
Employ resources available for domestic violence
Darren C. Leach, MSN, APRN, NP-C
Darren C. Leach is a nurse practitioner and author. He is licensed as an APRN by the State of Florida and Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. His professional experience ranges across the lifespan from infants to the elderly with positions in adult internal and emergency care, pediatric internal and emergency care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care as well as endocrinology and nephrology. He has also provided education to nurses, patients, and families in a variety of formats and settings. He received his Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 2005, and his Masters of Science degree in Family Health Nursing in 2010.
