     Studies have shown that childhood asthma significantly affects the lives of many children in the United States. Health care professionals need to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of asthma, know the treatments for asthma, be able to provide asthma education to patients and parents of children with asthma, as well as describe asthma control measures and prevention. This conversational “frequently asked questions” style course provides answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about asthma.

Educational Goals & Learning Outcomes

The goal of this continuing educational activity is to provide healthcare professionals with a broad knowledge base of asthma including; classifications and types of asthma, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, medications, asthma control and prevention as well as epidemiological factors affecting asthma. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Assess patients for signs and symptoms of asthma

  • Evaluate patients for asthma risk factors and who is more likely to get asthma

  • Differentiate methods of diagnosing asthma

  • Categorize the different classifications and types of asthma

  • Choose appropriate asthma treatments, including treatments for severe asthma

  • Manage asthma medications

  • Value the importance of asthma control and prevention

  • Appraise the economic burden of asthma

About the Course Author(s)

Darren C. Leach, MSN, APRN, NP-C

     Darren C. Leach is a nurse practitioner and author. He is licensed as an APRN by the State of Florida and Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. His professional experience ranges across the lifespan from infants to the elderly with positions in adult internal and emergency care, pediatric internal and emergency care, pediatric and neonatal intensive care as well as endocrinology and nephrology. He has also provided education to nurses, patients, and families in a variety of formats and settings. He received his Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 2005, and his Masters of Science degree in Family Health Nursing in 2010.
